Project type:Netidee (project number 1096, Call 9)
Time:11/2014 – 08/2015
Coordination and implemenation:Verein Offenes Lernen

The aim of the BYOD project was to make it possible for students to use their mobile devices in a useful way in school. BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device”.

The developed solution integrated BYOD in printed teaching tools (such as worksheets and books) by using a QR code or quicklink that is printed on the tool. The link leads students to an application that provides real added value for teachers and students (e.g. automatic translation, corrections, indicating parts not filled in, links to further ressources).

This approach makes it possible for school books to be further developed and added to after their are printed. Teachers can use their favorite books in a more individualised way.

Evaluating this shows that the use of QR codes is a time efficient usage for IT in schools because the setup time for e.g. starting a computer, logging in etc. is avoided: This is on the one hand because the QR codes lead students directly to where the work is supposed to be done, and on the other hand because all students and teachers can use their own devices which they are used to and know well.

The first book equipped with the QR codes was “Mathematik Genial 1”, Lemberger Verlag. It was put on the market in autumn 2016.
